Baghdad – Apr 2024

In support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 1 – No Poverty, Al-Turath University (TU) has launched a major community-health initiative aimed at improving the well-being of low-income children in local schools. This initiative demonstrates TU’s long-standing commitment to public health, social equity, and accessible healthcare for all, especially among underserved communities in Baghdad.

Led by the College of Health and Medical Technologies, in collaboration with the College of Pharmacy and the College of Nursing, the campaign provided free health screenings that included vision, hearing, and general physical examinations. The screenings helped identify early health concerns that could affect learning and development, ensuring that students receive timely medical care and follow-up support. In addition, TU faculty and students conducted short awareness sessions on hygiene, nutrition, and preventive healthcare to promote healthier lifestyles among children and families.

This initiative advances SDG 3 by strengthening preventive healthcare and promoting inclusive access to essential medical services. It also supports SDG 1 by addressing the socio-economic barriers that prevent low-income families from obtaining regular healthcare. By providing free screenings and education, TU helps to reduce the long-term effects of poverty while fostering healthier, more resilient communities.

The program was carried out in collaboration with non-profit NGO of Alrasikh origination and by TU’s medical and nursing students under faculty supervision, providing them with valuable hands-on learning in public-health practice and community medicine. This combination of academic engagement and community service reflects TU’s mission of connecting education with social responsibility.

The Al-Turath Medical Center played a central role in the initiative by deploying a mobile health unit equipped for diagnostics and primary care. The center’s departments—including Pediatrics, Women’s Health, Mental Health, Dialysis, Radiology, Dentistry, and Nursing Clinics—provided follow-up care for children who required additional evaluation or treatment.
