Do I need a prior visa before arriving in Iraq?
Yes. The study visa requires prior application through the official 'Study in Iraq' portal, regardless of your nationality. The process takes 6-10 weeks.
When does the academic year begin?
The academic year usually starts in September/October and continues until June, with two semesters. Applications usually open from March to July.
Can I change my major after admission?
Possibly during the first two weeks of the first semester, it requires the dean's approval and availability of seats in the desired specialization.
Is equivalency mandatory even with an agreement between my country and Iraq?
Yes — even with a bilateral educational agreement, the equivalency is formal but mandatory for final registration at the University. It is issued by the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
Is an international student allowed to work during their studies?
No, generally. Working without a permit invalidates the study residency. Some universities offer on-campus job opportunities (teaching assistant, research assistant) for a symbolic wage.
Is health insurance mandatory?
Highly recommended. Some medical and pharmacy colleges require it mandatorily. The annual insurance cost is approximately $200 – $500 depending on coverage.
What is the total cost for 4 years of a Bachelor's degree?
  • Theoretical college: $6,000 – $12,000 fees + $20,000 living expenses = ~$26,000 – $32,000
  • Medical college: $24,000 – $48,000 fees + $24,000 living expenses = ~$48,000 – $72,000
Can I travel within Iraq during the study period?
Yes, freely after residency is issued, always carrying documents. Cities to visit: Najaf, Karbala, Erbil, Mosul, Basra, Babylon.
What if I don't succeed in the first year?
Iraqi universities allow repeating a year. However, failing for 3 consecutive years may cancel the study residency. The University provides academic support for struggling students.
Are there special scholarships for specific nationalities?
Yes — bilateral agreements with: Sudan, Yemen, Palestine, Somalia, Djibouti, Mauritania, some African countries. Refer to the Iraqi embassy in your country for details.
Is Baghdad safe for international students?
Yes. Baghdad has been generally safe since 2018, checkpoints are widespread, and upscale residential areas (Al-Mansour, Al-Jadriya, Al-Karrada) are very safe. International students study and live without significant security issues.
Are halal foods and vegetarian alternatives available?
Yes. All meat in Baghdad is halal by default. Restaurants are abundant, and vegetarian meals are available in most restaurants (hummus, falafel, salads, pastries).
